CHAIRMAN STANDS DOWNAfter fifteen years as Chairman of the Yorkshire Kidney Research Fund, Ian Firth, who will be 70 this year, handed over the reins to Simon Bogusewski at the Annual General Meeting in March 2011. Having retired as Managing Director of Firth Powerfix Ltd in 2007, he had decided that his ability to attract funding from a previous wide range of National and International Companies was reducing, so new blood was required to drive the Fund forward. He said it had given him a great deal of pleasure and was a priviledge to be involved with the Yorkshire Kidney Research Fund, working with some very interesting and supportive people. As a Trustee and Committee member, he will continue to be involved along with his wife Pam, who was diagnosed with end stage renal failure in 1995. However, she was fortunate to receive a transplant in 1997 and continues to be very grateful for the care she receives from the team at St James’s University Hospital.Ian has been proud to be involved in innovative research and changes in the way that funding is provided for research. This has enabled research resources to be spread over a number of areas in Yorkshire, including supporting Doctors at many of the hospitals and researchers at Universities in Leeds and York. Fundraising is vital for the future of the Charity and it is very satisfying to have younger people helping to drive this forward. Over the years we have been the grateful recipients of many large donations and legacies, which have contributed to our ability us offer grants to more consultants and scientists in a wider geographical area. Recorded on our website are a list of recipients, with a variety of projects and a number of papers published as a result. Successful fundraising activities have included a Piano Event, a Fashion Show, a Plant Sale, Summer, Halloween and Christmas Fundraising, Toy and Games Sale, Bag Packing at Marks and Spencer London Marathon, 10K Great Yorkshire Run and the Annual Ball at the Queens, where last year we were privileged to have a very interesting dialogue with a Renal Transplant Patient and Dr Newstead, the lead Renal Consultant Physician in Leeds. Whilst this was only set-up on the evening, it illustrated, very well, what the ‘Gift of Life’ really means. The outgoing Chairman expressed his thanks to all the Doctors and Researchers, Patrons, Donors and Committee. Particular appreciation for the help and support of Dr Andrew Mooney, the Scientific Advisor, whose ability to explain everything so well in layman’s terms, is most helpful to the Committee and Trustees. He also thanked Professor A M Davison, who, although retired and living in the Borders, has been a great inspiration and continues to peer review, along with other eminent renal physicians.
Fundraising NewsKevin and Julie Wybrant and family helped to sponsor Simon Boguszewski when he ran the 2011 London Marathon. Kevin also got sponsorship for Simon from the management and staff at Wilfreda Beehive where he works.

Mrs Alison Dryden of Farnley Tyas near Huddersfield has presented a cheque for £1,250 to the Yorkshire Kidney Research Fund following fundraising during her year as President of Holmfirth Inner Wheel. Ian Firth presented a cheque for £1,230.50 to the Yorkshire Kidney Research Fund. This money was raised during his year as Worshipful Master of the Lodge of Probity No 61. The total amount raised over his year in office was shared equally between the YKRF and the West Riding Masonic Charities.

“Here at the YKRF we have just one thing that we focus on every day. This is to ensure that the highest quality research is funded, and that this makes a real difference to people's lives.”Taking over as Chairman of the Yorkshire Kidney Research Fund is a daunting task, particularly when you review the achievements of my predecessor. My mission however is simple, it is born from the love I have for my daughter and the absolute determination I have, to do all I can to eradicate the kidney disease which very nearly claimed her life in 2007.I joined the Committee of the YKRF in 2008 and was elected Vice Chairman in 2009. My aim during this period was to raise awareness of kidney disease by completing a series of unusual fundraising events, setting new World Endurance and Ultra Fitness Records. By far the most difficult took place at the Bawtry Health & Fitness Studio on 19th and 20th June 2009 when my very good friend Mark Goodwin and I undertook an epic challenge to set a new Ultra Fitness World; 23 hours and 5 minutes later we had set the record, more importantly we had raised over £15,000 for the Charity. My focus now is firmly set on the growth of the YKRF Committee. We have a very talented and dedicated Committee, but we need new members to help drive the Fund forward. We are looking for people who can bring new attributes and help us drive our number one aim, to make research happen and make a real difference to people’s lives. Making Research Happen

In November 2010, Dr Andrew Mooney (scientific adviser to the Yorkshire Kidney Research Fund) and Dr Nick Hornigold (post-doctoral scientist supported by the Yorkshire Kidney Research Fund) attended the American Society of Nephrology Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado. Their work, which has been supported by the Yorkshire Kidney Research Fund, had been selected for presentation at their annual meeting meeting, which is widely regarded to be the most important kidney research meeting in the world.Dr Hornigold presented three pieces of work at the meeting. The research he conducts with YKRF support focuses on the role of a protein, Hic-5, which appears to play a critical role in the development of kidney disease. Hic-5 has previously been identified as an important protein in moths, where it plays a role in the development of muscles used for flying, but amazingly it is found in many other animals where it has been proposed to control several different processes important for life.Dr Hornigold has shown that it is not normally present in the glomerular part of kidneys, where blood filtering happens, but it is present in some of the tubules in the kidneys, where the filtrate from the blood is processed into urine. Dr Hornigold’s research shows that as kidney disease develops, Hic-5 appears in glomerular cells in the kidney, and its appearance is associated with a change in these cells so that they behave differently and start to form a scar in kidneys that stops them working properly. This work was published earlier this year in the premier renal journal Kidney International.At the meeting, Dr Hornigold presented the most recent advances in this work, supported by the YKRF. His first presentation demonstrated that with experimental drugs it is possible to prevent the appearance of Hic-5 in experimental kidney disease in animals, and this is associated with an improved outcome. His second presentation explained how this effect happens, and his final presentation explained the recent fascinating observation that during kidney disease, Hic-5 disappears from the tubular cells that normally have this protein inside them. Therefore it appears that Hic-5 has important roles to play in different types of kidney disease.Dr Hornigold said “Attending a meeting like the American Society of Nephrology is a great opportunity. We have the chance to show what we have been doing in Yorkshire to a truly worldwide audience, so we can all work towards the goal of improving the outlook for patients with kidney disease.” He added “At previous meetings, scientists from Japan saw our results and undertook experiments themselves to confirm and add to our findings. It is amazing to think that work done in Yorkshire is being reproduced and developed in so many corners of the world.”Dr Mooney said “The response to our work was very positive indeed. Many researchers from around the world sought us out to speak to us about it. It is a long way to come, but it is a unique opportunity to show what we have been doing to a world audience of kidney scientists. All of us really think that this research could lead to new treatments for patients with kidney disease, and without the support of the Yorkshire Kidney Research Fund this work would simply not have been possible.”

Research Update from Dr Andrew MooneyAt our AGM recently, we reviewed the performance of the YKRF scientific projects and were very pleased with the results. In the last 12 months, the acquisition of research reports has enabled the fund to more easily review and measure the success of its supported projects, and now the research output is starting to improve in parallel.Over the last 12 months, the YKRF has supported diverse projects in Yorkshire aimed at solving different problems for patients with renal disease and improve their outlook. Currently the YKRF supports research into dialysis amyloid by Dr Eric Hewitt, research into the identification of uroepithelial stem cells by Professor Jenny Southgate and Dr Felix Wezel, research into the mechanisms by which the bladder lining resists bacterial infection by Professor Jenny Southgate and Dr Sally Feather, research into blood pressure control in dialysis patients by Dr Colin Jones, research into new blood and urine markers that identify renal transplant rejection by Dr Matthew Welberry-Smith and research into cellular mechanisms of kidney scarring and progressive kidney damage by Dr Hornigold and myself.The YKRF committee has received presentations at its meetings from the researchers, and each appears to have been successful. In the last 12 months, there have been the following results - 7 abstract presentations in international conferences; 2 abstract presentations at national meetings; 1 publication in a peer reviewed journal; 3 publications under review in peer reviewed journals;1 invited editorial in an international journal and a prestigious prize in the UK National Transplant meeting. In addition, 3 other manuscripts are in preparation for submission to peer-review journals. Other projects recently completed continue to show likelihood of significant further publications as results are analysed and written up. This provides a significant return, and the YKRF committee feel proud of this achievement. However, this is only possible thanks to donations to the charity, and those supporting the YKRF can be assured that their generosity is helping improve the outlook for patients with kidney disease.Over future years, it is important that the abstracts are converted into manuscripts in preparation, the manuscripts in preparation become submitted manuscripts, and submitted manuscripts become publications. We think this will be achieved by continuing the review mechanisms now in place - by presentations at committee meetings and submission of interim and final reports to the committee for scrutiny. We are optimistic that the ultimate goal the YKRFs aspiration to pump-prime research so it can obtain nationally competitive funding will soon come to fruition.In the last 10 years working with the YKRF, I have never known a scientifically stronger position. I would encourage people to continue to support this valuable and effective charity. Thanks to its superb work over recent years, I think the YKRF can look forward to a bright future supporting more successful research, so that kidney patients can look forward to a better future themselves.
